39/100: JT

A very cheerful and knowledgeable guide for our tour of the 61-metre level of Central Deborah gold-mine. Tours are also available for several other levels, including a full-day experience at the 228-metre level.

What a great shot of this jolly fellow. It must have been a very interesting tour. I doubt that I would be able to go underground as get get claustrophobia ;-)

A man who looks happy in his work. A lovely image in B&W.

@dide Oh yes, very much so. Like most (all??) of the guides he's a retiree very invested in the mining history of Bendigo in general, and this mine in particular. We were lucky that day, just my daughter and me for the 61-metre level tour at that time.

@ludwigsdiana Definitely not the place for you to explore!!

I can trust such a guy and even go to level 61m with him.
Great b&w portrait.

I will leave the exploration underground to you and hope you share some photos! Not for me!

Loved Haskar's comment above, tend to agree:)

Mines are such an experience. I visited an active one, once, for work. We descended to what they called "level 100". I asked explanations: did they mean 100m below the surface? No: they meant 100m above sea level -the surface was 600m... so I was on an elevator going down for 500m.
It was the "maiden voyage" for that deep gallery, and I had the privilege of pushing the trigger to detonate the explosive charge... thrilling.

Wow!! I’m way too timid to go into a mine!! Wonderful pic!!

I am claustrophobic, no way that I am going there, even with a cheerful guide.

He's so relaxed looking and seems to be enjoying his role. Impressed you went that deep!

@haskar He was a really lovely bloke, we enjoyed his company.

@pamknowler I took a few, very few. The only light in the mine itself is from the lamps on the helmets everyone has to wear, bit like bike lamps. The light wanders around of course, as you turn your head.

@fbailey We felt very secure in his capable hands.

@domenicododaro Oh wow, what an experience Domenico, would've been fabulous. I'd have loved to do the full-day deep level experience here, but it involves climbing ladders and other physical stuff that my body can't manage any more. Even the next level down involved climbing ladders. Sigh.

@onewing He was certainly a character Babs, loved his company. Robin and I loved our time down there. We did see some gold still in the quartz - well protected by glass and padlocks. The deep-level experiences involve some 'digging' and are 'finders keepers'. The physical requisites for those levels were beyond my capability these days.

@casablanca It was something I've wanted to do for ages. Loved the whole thing.

@taffy He was a lovely bloke, we felt very safe going down there with him. We only went to the first level, the deepest one is 228 metres down and is an all-day experience including some digging, drilling and blasting, or so I believe from the information sheets.
