The race that stops a nation

Being the first Tuesday in November it was Melbourne Cup Day, a public holiday and big day of celebration and partying in Victoria in particular but plenty of interstate interest too. The golf club had a 4-ball competition this morning, followed by lunch with sweeps and the races on TV. Despite the ghastly weather it proved to be a great fun day all round. The Cup is rightly called the race that stops a nation.
I forgot to watch and was sorry I hadn't. But caught up on the news! So exciting!

@maggiemae Absolutely!! As usual, the horses I drew in the sweeps are still running round the track.

- Seems you and I must've drawn the same horses! I even paid to have two in the race, but that didn't help either… It does sound like you had a great day, in spite of the weather.

At first I thought I'd seen this one- but then the television screen clued me in! I'm surprised to see everyone sitting, but then there isn't a head looking in any other direction! Good shot.

Looks like a fun get together

@dide Yeah I had two too, never heard of either - before or during the race!! Great day nevertheless.

@hermann Oh yes, all the bar staff, the chef and kitchen staff too (standing behind the bar).

@gilbertwood Yeah, the kitchen was empty of people too.

@robz I think there were a couple, but pretty much tongue-in-cheek sort of thing. Most people in golf gear.

@merrelyn Seems to be the story of my sweep picks.

@olivetreeann Every single one of the staff in the whole place was watching that race on one or another TV screens. It's enormously popular in the literal meaning of the word, there's a parade in Melbourne of the jockeys on the Monday and 'everyone' gets wound up about the Cup. People bet who never bet otherwise, and many more are involved in office/workplace/social club sweeps.

@jgpittenger It was a fabulous day out, apart from some squally weather at times that blew in from Bass Strait. We had a ball.

Such a great candid shot that tells that story !!
