Half the sky …

This shot shows a small section of a much larger framed piece in the Bendigo Regional Art Gallery entitled Founders of Bendigo. The rest of the 1000 or so images are similar. Is it just me, or do others wonder how come the founding bit is confined to half the population? Bendigo was founded during the mid-nineteenth-century gold rushes and is now a major regional Victorian city. http://www.bendigohistory.com/review.shtml
Interesting thought you have there! Clearly there was no general consensus as to WHO the founder was! That said, I love this collage...gorgeous vintage coloration!

@Weezilou And no women!!!!

@golftragic I saw that coming and was surprised you didn't point that out in your caption! If there had been a woman in the photos she would have been worth reading about!

@Weezilou We are, as usual, on the same page!

The first thing I noticed when I saw this photo was 'no women'

@onewing Me too!!! Not one woman in the whole bewhiskered lot!

Mmmmm, no women !!!!!!. I find all those beards rather off putting :))))

Judging by the population of Bendigo It is a fair bet some women were involved.

Not a single woman (or even a married one) ... fascinating image

It says it all - the little lady just stayed at home doing unimportant stuff!

Hmmm... As you say, that's just a small clipping - maybe there's is a woman among the remaining pictures? - I'm desperate to keep a glimmer of hope...

@jerome Sorry to disappoint you Jerome, not one woman amoungst hundreds and hundreds of bewhiskered old boys. I'll bet the Bendigo Historical Society could nominate some though. These are, of course, very old photos mounted in a huge frame. I think the whole thing was donated by some society/group/association or other, can't remember.

@hermann Me too, I loathe the current male fashion for beards and 4-day stubble. Disappointed but not surprised by the lack of women.

@ethelperry Just what I thought to myself said Pooh. Added to which I'll bet there were plenty of women involved in businesses, health and education etc. Just gotta open both eyes boys.

@fbailey Simultaneously fascinating and infuriating for all the reasons you'd well know.
February 12th, 2018
@robz Yeah, exactly what I thought as I was seething. I'm sure if the person/s who made this piece (which is pretty old itself) had looked a little harder there would've been plenty of women worthy of inclusion. Bah!!

@golftragic o.k. - I give up.

@jerome You and me both. Fortunately, most modern males (in civilised countries) have completely different attitudes these days. I have a son and two grandsons and they're all into equality of all kinds, as is my son-in-law.

A real 'mens club' going on here. I'll bet there should have been some women up there.

@888rachel We're on the same page. Funny that.
