Signs of our times Mk 2: Sept 14

Something quite different today. My elder grandson Digby is, in normal times, a boarder at a Melbourne boys' college. He plays a trumpet in the school's brass band. Today's post is a screen shot of some of the boys, from wherever they're isolating, playing the Fanfare from Janacek's Sinfoietta. A great performance especially given the band members have practised largely alone and everyone's playing on his own. It's a huge band: 40 trumpets, 30 Trombones, 9 French Horns, 7 Euphonia, 7 percussion and 13 staff members overseeing it all. If anyone's interested there's a link below.

@taffy I was gobsmacked that they'd all managed to produce such a brilliant performance under such adverse circumstances. I'm a musical ignoramus, but a very musical friend of mine said it was an excellent performance of a very tricky piece. Such satisfaction for all students and staff involved too.

Wonderful, wonderful! I listened to the tune, and as a former player (saxophone) I am amazed at the ability of so many young musicians to put together such a performance. Chapeau to Digby and to all his friends and teachers!

@sdutoit Thank you very much

@ludwigsdiana They're supposed to go back to school in two weeks time. Fingers crossed nothing bad happens to prevent that.

@julzmaioro Oh yes, how I do wish for a return to some semblance of normality. Unless something goes bad again Victorian kids are due to go back to school in 2 weeks at the end of this holiday period. The kids are doing it pretty tough, especially the preps and the older ones in their final years.

@aikiuser @photographycrazy @merrelyn My sincere thanks everyone.

@maggiemae The funny thing is that we're not a musical family which makes his achievement even more special.

@domenicododaro Thank you so much Domenico, the boy needs confidence so I passed on your comment to him, hope you don't mind. With all the interruptions of this (his penultimate) year - school/home remote learning/ school/ home again etc I felt he'd pulled his weight in what I thought was an amazing achievement.

@jgpittenger Oh dear, I do hope you can listen to it sometime Jane. What a bummer.
September 20th, 2020
@dide Thanks Dianne, he could use a confidence boost, especially during this disrupted year. He's in Year 11, a time that's so crucial in his education with only one more year to go and some subjects spread between both years.

@annied Thank you very much Annie, I appreciate your comment. Because of the school he attends I hesitated to post it all in case some folks didn't like 'that sort' of school for all the reasons you'd well know.
