I am guessing that this is a downy woodpecker but then when I looked online a hairy woodpecker looks the same too.
If any one knows what this one is called please let me know.
Sure was fun to have him fly in front of my truck and stop at the telephone pole so I could catch him in my lens.
Whichever woodpecker this is, your pic is a wonderful capture of this beautiful bird!
From the length of the bill, I would have guessed this one to be a hairy woodpecker. (The bill on the downy is rather small: 1/3 the distance from the base of the bill to the back of the head. The bill on the hairy is about the same length as the head.) Also, I don't see any banding on the outer tail feathers -- although it could just be the angle of the pic. Anyway, just my 2 cents :).
