Te Rewa Rewa Bridge by graemestevens

Te Rewa Rewa Bridge

This is the Te Rewa Rewa bridge at Waiwakaiho in sleepy old New Plymouth, with the obligatory Mount Taranaki in the background (with his head in the clouds today). This bridge, designed to represent the bones of a whale (with rotting flesh removed) has won quite few design awards and is a high-light of our 8km Coastal Walkway - its constructed of steel and concrete so I am yet to figure out a way to destroy it completely with fire. If I could get the flame hot enough somehow...
Best viewed against the black surprisingly.
Like this Graeme - is it meant to imitate a whale's carcass or is that just me being fanciful? Framing Mount Taranaki in the 'eye' of the bridge lifts this shot wonderfully.
September 29th, 2014
Great image! The detail in the whites and the contrast is so beautifully done. As for destroying it with fire, have you tried a blow torch yet? That might work, it would just take a really long time.
September 29th, 2014
@vignouse Thanks very much - and no, you're not being fanciful at all. I forgot to mention that but have added it now...I would have liked it more with the whales flesh hanging from it. Maybe for a Halloween shot...
September 29th, 2014
@kamen088 Thank you very much - ain't Lightroom wonderful? ;) I have a blowtorch at home too...hmmmm
September 29th, 2014

September 29th, 2014
Humongous fav! Such a spectacular composition for this interesting bit of architecture... Why do you wish to set it alight?
September 29th, 2014
@amyleewinfield Thank you very much indeed :)
@northy Thank you very much - I think it would look spectacular on fire, but my main reason to set it alight is because it's there ;) Wouldn't dream of it to be honest, it's one of my favourite bridges...not that I'm a bridge boffin...
September 29th, 2014
Oh wow!!!! What a fantastic shot and I love it in B&W an instant fav :-)
September 29th, 2014

September 29th, 2014
I keep looking for you wrapped in plastic or with a gun of some sort in the pic but I cant find you. Great shot Graeme
September 29th, 2014
You could try nuking it! What a fascinating bridge, for Pete's sake don't tell the Japs though, they'll want to make soup outta the bones or something.
September 29th, 2014
Oh wow -- this is an instant fav for so many reasons. I love the way you've framed the mountain with the sculpture, your POV, the lines that form the composition, the processing...really stunning -- too bad double favs don't exist!

September 29th, 2014
Not read the commentary wanted to give my initial serious opinion. Then I'll read and get swayed by popular opinion. So.... It's awesome. Fantastically fantastic. Composition ally v strong. Just wow inducing. Right now I will a. Read you commentary and b. Read comments then c. Possibly return with silliness. Good evening to you you right wee canny lad.
September 29th, 2014
This is so amazing!I have never seen anything remotely like it.Such a dramatic photo! Fav!
September 29th, 2014
So it looks like everyone has kept the tone high this morning. We'll just await the arrival of @gigiflower but as you are looking forward to her shot (so am I) perhaps it'll be mutual appreciation day here on 365.
September 29th, 2014
@newbank Why thank you, you lovely little corner of humanity you :) I look forward to your return forthwith. As for at @gigiflower, I'm not doing a very good job of waiting patiently. If I knew where she lived and had a big stick I'd be jabbing her in the shoulder with it to get her moving.
@mzzhope Thank you so much, very much appreciated :)
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens I'm not waiting patiently either and she promised to post early. I am up and behind so she must be up.....she did have work things today but that seems a very bad excuse......she needs to get her priorities right...
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens it's a hard shove - believe it LOL
September 29th, 2014
Sam
@graemestevens @newbank Please check my page...............it's UP!
September 29th, 2014
A classic Taranaki shot. I have my own version but not as good as this
September 29th, 2014
@deliad Thanks very much - bit of cliched shot down here, but I love that bridge!
@gigiflower Please check your page, I commented.
@newbank Damn straight. We should have words.
@annied Oh I do, I really do.
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens and it seems by your tone you are liking it too
September 29th, 2014
@annied Indubitably darl, indubitably. :))
September 29th, 2014
I so love this setting. Have seen it before on 365. Must drive Hazel down one day soon to see this view 👍👍
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens i will let that one go in light of the double indubitably - I do like a double indubitably
September 29th, 2014
@annied Given recent Tigon/Liger comments I would think you'd love anything doubled...
@andreajoy Thanks very much, I posted one a few months back as well but it's a fairly cliched shot for down this way!
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens hahahahahaha would you think that?
September 29th, 2014
@annied Ummmm...no?
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens well I do - so you were correct LOL
September 29th, 2014
@annied I need some quiet time now...
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens ok - SHHHHHHHH!
September 29th, 2014
@annied Shooshing as we speak. I realise that makes very little sense, but I am in a darkened room and trying my hardest not to think of anything doubled. Damn. Oops, and again. Stop it. Stop.
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens HAHAHAHAHAHAHA - ooops teehee teehee
September 29th, 2014
@annied snigger
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens my mind is in a dark space thinking about Madhatters creepy week
September 29th, 2014
@annied I haven't given it much thought to be honest. I'll probably throw one out there on the weekend, just have to come up with some inspiration...
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens mmmm my daughter has a Chucky doll - a Jason doll - a small Freddy Kruger doll and a Freedy knife hands hahahahaha
September 29th, 2014
@annied ooooh...excitement plus! None of those creepy me out though, and it can't for the life of me figure out how to get a shot of Mamma Pus from a Clive Barker book...
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens ah yes Clive Barker - Freddy gave me the scares in the first couple but I love Jason and Chucky hahahaha
September 29th, 2014
@annied Jason was kind of cool. I'm actually feeling creepily uninspired at the moment. May have to give it some serious thought - Stephen King has never scared me, movies seldom do (except for Pride & Prejudice, that was damned creepy)...I'll have to come up with something though, it would be rude not to play along!
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens as for Hellraiser - that concept scared the hell out of me and I am sure I had nightmares about Pinhead and the Cenobites after watching the movie
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens HAHAHAHA that Pride and Prejudice - lol - I love Stephen King - It is the only one that unnerved me though - the book not the stupid ducking movie thing they made
I love the way Jason moves so slowly but always gets where he needs to go - and he is good with a machete
September 29th, 2014
@annied See, I thought It was a very good story but it never unnerved me in the least. And the movie was crappy crappington. I really have no idea on this one...thought is required me thinks.
September 29th, 2014
@graemestevens you need to put your gas mask on to help you think
September 29th, 2014
@annied That's definitely part of the Halloween shot...
September 29th, 2014
Very cool shot - looks great in b&w. Please have the decency to keep the bridge intact until after we have had a chance to visit it!!
September 29th, 2014
@dide Thank you very much. I can't make any promises but I'll try my hardest...maybe ;)
September 29th, 2014
Sam

September 30th, 2014
holy tish you have a lot of favs - again I am going to feel inferior - ducking hell - can you jump from this bridge
September 30th, 2014
@dibzgreasley Thank you so much, always appreciated :)
@annied You can jump from it, but it's not very high so you'd only get slightly damp after plummeting to your doom through 6 feet of fresh air...and I know, like, right?
September 30th, 2014
@graemestevens oh - I will have to find a higher bridge - fresh air will not harm me
September 30th, 2014
brilliant capture. what a shot. fav
September 30th, 2014

Gorgeous shot, and a FAV!! Love the carcass shape of the bridge, the contrast between the bright white and the background with the snow capped mountain, and I am partial to bridges and piers! Surprised you have not mentioned "the hole" again, as you have definitely framed this arched opening as one of those leading to a nether world!
October 2nd, 2014
@panthora You leave my nether world out of this ;) This is my favourite bridge...always worth a look and thank you very much indeed
