This is the Te Rewa Rewa bridge at Waiwakaiho in sleepy old New Plymouth, with the obligatory Mount Taranaki in the background (with his head in the clouds today). This bridge, designed to represent the bones of a whale (with rotting flesh removed) has won quite few design awards and is a high-light of our 8km Coastal Walkway - its constructed of steel and concrete so I am yet to figure out a way to destroy it completely with fire. If I could get the flame hot enough somehow...
Best viewed against the black surprisingly.
I am a confirmed and certifiable nutbar with a penchant for skulls, bones, blood, guts, fire and anything slightly peculiar and mostly bizarre. I also...
Like this Graeme - is it meant to imitate a whale's carcass or is that just me being fanciful? Framing Mount Taranaki in the 'eye' of the bridge lifts this shot wonderfully.
Great image! The detail in the whites and the contrast is so beautifully done. As for destroying it with fire, have you tried a blow torch yet? That might work, it would just take a really long time.
@vignouse Thanks very much - and no, you're not being fanciful at all. I forgot to mention that but have added it now...I would have liked it more with the whales flesh hanging from it. Maybe for a Halloween shot...
@rustymonkey Thank you very much :) @julzmaioro Thank you very much - you'd better hurry, you need to get here before I burn it to the ground ;) @kfromnj Thank you very much, much appreciated
@amyleewinfield Thank you very much indeed :) @northy Thank you very much - I think it would look spectacular on fire, but my main reason to set it alight is because it's there ;) Wouldn't dream of it to be honest, it's one of my favourite bridges...not that I'm a bridge boffin...
What a stunning shot! The design of the bridge is brilliant and you've captured it beautifully, using it to frame the mountain peak i the distance.
I would double Fav it if I could!
@jsw0109 Thanks very much :) @annied Well aren't I lucky. Or is that ducky? Oh, and thanks muchly darl. @orangecrush Thanks very much :) @hermann Thanks very much indeed @barbarajdonnellan Thank you kindly, appreciated @voiceprintz Thank you kindly :) @pdulis Thanks very much :) @rosiekerr Instantly thank you very much :) @joemuli I wouldn't go that far but thank you very much ;) @ukandie1 Thank you very much :) @eyeamlisa Thanks - all arranged by Mother Nature working closely with the designer...I'm just the dumbo behind the camera :) @redy4et Thank you very much, much appreciated @777margo Thank you kindly :) @aecasey Thanks very much - every now and then I can get it right! @angeliekevl Thank you very much :) @juliedduncan Thank you very much, appreciated @espyetta Thank you very much :) @bigugly Thanks very much - shooting in RAW seems to have made a difference... @lifepause I'll give that a crack, really would be more spectacular on fire. Possibly melting too. @leanne333 Thank you very much, much appreciated
You could try nuking it! What a fascinating bridge, for Pete's sake don't tell the Japs though, they'll want to make soup outta the bones or something.
Oh wow -- this is an instant fav for so many reasons. I love the way you've framed the mountain with the sculpture, your POV, the lines that form the composition, the processing...really stunning -- too bad double favs don't exist!
@cutemagic It's certainly one of a kind, and thanks very much :) @jess1204 Thank you so much, very much appreciated @terryliv I'm hiding in the shrubbery to the right...and thanks very much @golftragic LOL, heaven forbid! And thank you very much. How's the new pooch settling in? @taffy Wow, thank you so much, really appreciate that :) @ceilidh Thank you most kindly nice lady :) @annied I thought that might be the case. Very restrained of you though,
@susale Thanks very much, I think it might be my most favouritist bridge :) @andrewkru Thank you very much, much appreciated @brigette Thank you so much! Every now and then I can get a good one in there!
Not read the commentary wanted to give my initial serious opinion. Then I'll read and get swayed by popular opinion. So.... It's awesome. Fantastically fantastic. Composition ally v strong. Just wow inducing. Right now I will a. Read you commentary and b. Read comments then c. Possibly return with silliness. Good evening to you you right wee canny lad.
So it looks like everyone has kept the tone high this morning. We'll just await the arrival of @gigiflower but as you are looking forward to her shot (so am I) perhaps it'll be mutual appreciation day here on 365.
@newbank Why thank you, you lovely little corner of humanity you :) I look forward to your return forthwith. As for at @gigiflower, I'm not doing a very good job of waiting patiently. If I knew where she lived and had a big stick I'd be jabbing her in the shoulder with it to get her moving. @mzzhope Thank you so much, very much appreciated :)
@graemestevens I'm not waiting patiently either and she promised to post early. I am up and behind so she must be up.....she did have work things today but that seems a very bad excuse......she needs to get her priorities right...
@deliad Thanks very much - bit of cliched shot down here, but I love that bridge! @gigiflower Please check your page, I commented. @newbank Damn straight. We should have words. @annied Oh I do, I really do.
@annied Given recent Tigon/Liger comments I would think you'd love anything doubled... @andreajoy Thanks very much, I posted one a few months back as well but it's a fairly cliched shot for down this way!
@annied Shooshing as we speak. I realise that makes very little sense, but I am in a darkened room and trying my hardest not to think of anything doubled. Damn. Oops, and again. Stop it. Stop.
@annied ooooh...excitement plus! None of those creepy me out though, and it can't for the life of me figure out how to get a shot of Mamma Pus from a Clive Barker book...
@annied Jason was kind of cool. I'm actually feeling creepily uninspired at the moment. May have to give it some serious thought - Stephen King has never scared me, movies seldom do (except for Pride & Prejudice, that was damned creepy)...I'll have to come up with something though, it would be rude not to play along!
@graemestevens as for Hellraiser - that concept scared the hell out of me and I am sure I had nightmares about Pinhead and the Cenobites after watching the movie
@graemestevens HAHAHAHA that Pride and Prejudice - lol - I love Stephen King - It is the only one that unnerved me though - the book not the stupid ducking movie thing they made
I love the way Jason moves so slowly but always gets where he needs to go - and he is good with a machete
@annied See, I thought It was a very good story but it never unnerved me in the least. And the movie was crappy crappington. I really have no idea on this one...thought is required me thinks.
@pittcj17 Thanks very much :) @pammerritt Thank you kindly :) @lynnilou Thanks very much - every now and then I get this lark right! @ounooi Thank you very much indeed @neatz Thanks very much - it's a very cool bridge @blueberry1222 Thanks very much, much appreciated @redpants Thank you very much :) @anazad511 A big thank you :) @lorrainelouise Thank you most kindly @essafel Thank you kindly nice lady :) @shepherdmanswife Thanks very much, appreciated @pinkpaintpot Thanks very much...you have a bridge expert? @gigiflower Well, thank you very much nice lady person, much appreciated :)
Wow! You blew the top off the photos for today, didn't you! Congrats for all the favs! - it will be on PP when I give it the 44th fav! Do you have a problem with burning bridges?
@maggiemae Thank you very much - I've burned a few in my time but generally I try to keep them intact where ever possible @rachelwithey Thank you very much indeed :) @janiskay Thank you very much - it's one of my favourite bridges... @claireuk Thank you very much, appreciated @tellefella It's a stunning piece of steel, and thank you
@dibzgreasley Thank you so much, always appreciated :) @annied You can jump from it, but it's not very high so you'd only get slightly damp after plummeting to your doom through 6 feet of fresh air...and I know, like, right?
Gorgeous shot, and a FAV!! Love the carcass shape of the bridge, the contrast between the bright white and the background with the snow capped mountain, and I am partial to bridges and piers! Surprised you have not mentioned "the hole" again, as you have definitely framed this arched opening as one of those leading to a nether world!
Great shot, and fantastic to see it on TT. To me, it should have had the top spot -- and I mean that sincerely. This is one of my all time favorite shots I've seen on 365 - an amazing composition and a photo I wish I could claim as mine.
@graemestevens I'm Nerang at the back of the Gold Coast these days, but I'm from south Taranaki & like most Kiwis, no matter where we roam NZ will always be home, especially true for us Taranaki-ites
@julzmaioro Thank you very much - you'd better hurry, you need to get here before I burn it to the ground ;)
