The Big Lad by graemestevens

The Big Lad

I know this is something out of the ordinary for me but there is a reason.
Once a month, because deep down I'm a nice guy, I write a blog for Greyhounds as Pets here in sleepy ol' New Zealand. This is Wiz, one of our two retired greyhounds, disgracing himself by sleeping on our bed...which leads me to ask why we always insist on white bed linen.
Wiz also has a particularly bad habit of sleeping with his eyes open, which is unnerving to say the least, so in this shot he is actually sound asleep.
Great shot!

awwww, what a sweetie!!!

It is a little unnerving when they sleep with their eyes open. I do find it amusing that greyhounds can be so lazy.

Love it! FAV*)

handsome guy. brilliant portrait.

Love this shot! Maybe gray sheets? I have a friend who has and also rescues italian Greyhounds. Much smaller than this guy I think.
August 31st, 2015
@trinda A heck of a lot smaller - this lad stands tall enough that I don't have to bend down to scratch his ears.
@lisamccloskey Thank you very much :)
@katerinatina Thank you so much :)
@karlow75 Unbelievably lazy - both of ours. They're just built for that sprint though. This boy was clocked at 62km per hour in his racing days.
@cindyloo Thanks, the dog ain't bad either ;)
@harbie Thanks very much :)

Fav! Wonderful shot. And It's good to meet another dog lover.

Wiz is gorgeous and what a "softie" (that is you ofcourse)! Love your tags for this shot

Those eyes are so beautiful, you have captured the personality. Great shot

Wonderful pic! Wiz is a cutie!

Good old Wiz...
August 31st, 2015
Such a beautiful capture! So you do have a soft side! Lovely to see it peep out once in a while! Love Wiz! Fav!

Do I see any resemblance in glance?
August 31st, 2015
@mastermek We do spend a lot of time together, so probably...
@pamknowler Thanks very much - our other one, Lucy, is notoriously difficult to photograph and a master at the art of hiding...
@tonygig He's a good lad but hasn't figured out that this particular bed is for humans only.
@photographycrazy Thanks very much - he's a big fart sack actually, but we love him
@shazzym Thanks very much...the lazy personality....
@colleenbrown88 Thanks very much - I believe he's classed as a "caramel brindle"...I haven't licked him to find out about flavouring though ;)
@kristenrpics Thanks very much - how can you not love a dog? ;)

Nice to see Wiz again... how about showing us the pair of them running on one of 'your' beaches?
August 31st, 2015
Neat image. My dad used to sleep with one eye open….perhaps it was because he had 5 daughters to keep an eye on!
August 31st, 2015
he is gorgeous
and white is a ridiculous colour for anything but clouds and......I am sure there are one or two other things
however it does lend itself to bleaching
August 31st, 2015
@annied I like to pretend I'm virginal while sleeping, hence the white
@dide I only have one daughter and still sleep with one eye open...
@vignouse Easier said than done as Lucy does not run, at all. Hence why she was retired. In the summer there's a group of us that gets together on the beaches to run our hounds, sometimes there's about 16 - 20 hounds on a good outing, so you never know...

Wiz is a generous soul allowing YOU to share HIS bed. That is the way it works is it not ? Great shot of this lucky rescue dog :))
August 31st, 2015
Love this soft side Graeme! He's a very cool looking dog and this is a beautiful capture. A bit creepy he's actually sound asleep there but we love creepy. :)
August 31st, 2015
Awwwwww, he looks like a big sweetie-pie! :)
August 31st, 2015
Lovely looking dog.

Spectacular shot, fav
August 31st, 2015
Really great portrait. He looks very serene...
August 31st, 2015
That's what I refer to as a BIB (bum in butter) dog!
August 31st, 2015
That is a beautiful dog, I have heard that they are a great bread. Our Lab mix we adopted likes to sleep on our bed, I refuse to let her when it is night time because she snores really loud, along with the eyes half open thing. It's kinda cute but not while I'm trying to get sleep.

Wonderful "straight on" POV for this adorable dog. Weirdly fascinating, how he sleeps with his eyes open, too. A very handsome "rescue" and good for you to tolerate letting him enjoy the white sheets!
August 31st, 2015
You are a man of many talents , greyhounds as pets. I suppose you've heard the joke about the man who buys a racehorse, sends it to a trainer. after a month he rings the trainer and asks"will my horse win races", to which the trainer reply's "oh yes it will, but it will be in the belly of a greyhound". Any way Wiz looks like a good pal to have , sleeping with an eye open...
August 31st, 2015
A wonderful shot of this dog and really nice window into this monthly good guy thing you do. He looks soooo comfy!
August 31st, 2015
Wiz sounds like a character! I love the mischievous part of him and the photo certainly brings out the sweetness too!
August 31st, 2015
Aaaaaaaah :)
August 31st, 2015
You have a very soft heart under all that gruff....your Wiz is looking at you very adoringly & of course you will never move him off your crisp white sheets! White sheets are a must for B&B !
August 31st, 2015
@happypat Yes I do but we need to keep it a secret ;)
@pistache Sickening isn't it...
@susanalena Thanks very much - he's just a big lump really ;)
@taffy He's far too comfy if you ask me, taking liberties with my bedding...
@jack4john He's always watching and waiting...usually for walk time
@rosiekerr It's completely unnerving at times, more so when he growls as well...
@spikez I know the feeling - and yes, they make amazing pets - not barking, minimal shedding, lazy, placid...
@salza They both are ;)
@lsquared Thanks and yes...for a change...
@soboy5 Thank you very much :)
@nickspicsnz He's one of my two favourite greyhounds...
@juliedduncan He is indeed :)
@kerosene It's how we roll in this house - we're all creepy here ;)
@hermann That is the way indeed, it's almost at the point where I have to ask him permission to go to bed...
August 31st, 2015
Those eyes get me. I love love love dogs, and just recently lost my soulmate boy Tenaya. They steal our heart, no? Great shot Graeme.
August 31st, 2015
I showed this picture to my husband. He said Wiz has the same expression as our rescue girl (breed totally unknown, only definite is that she's canine!). It was for her that the BIB acronym came into being.
August 31st, 2015
He is mega cool!
August 31st, 2015
Super shot, i'm jealous of his ability to sleep with his eyes open..if only i could do that.
August 31st, 2015
@slash I think that sometimes but then realise that my eyeballs would dry out...
@overalvandaan That he is :)
@salza Ah I see - In my humble opinion rescues are the only way to get a pet
@pixelchix Thanks very much - yes, they do, and it doesn't take long either
September 1st, 2015
Lovely to see your softer side, which we all knew was hidden in there. Wiz is gorgeous. How freaky that they sleep with their eyes open - not sure if you are kidding or not!
September 1st, 2015
@888rachel I'm definitely not kidding, it can be a bit off putting at times...
September 1st, 2015
He's a beautiful boy. One of my best friends rescued a greyhound that looks just like him! This one clearly owns the bed.
September 1st, 2015
@epcello Thanks very much...he'd like to think that he owns the bed. And he'd be quite right ;)
September 1st, 2015
Great capture

@yeshanghai Thanks very much :)
