I think you had the right idea here, but what you might be reacting to is the lighting. To me it just seems a bit flat as if the light source was overly bright. I could be totally wrong but that's what it looks like to me. A softer light source (or maybe a filter over the one you were using) would have brought more details out in the petals and made the background less "white" if that makes any sense. It's still a good shot compositionally speaking- I like the way the petal is balanced in the shot.

I used a flash, which I seldom use, and don't really know what I am doing with it. It was too dark not to use one though. I appreciate the comment about the composition because that is something I strive for in all my photos. @tunia LOL! You are easily impressed! I often spend 10 minutes on a photo from shot to process to post and it often shows. I am not much of a cook and my house needs prayer because it is so neglected!
