Unbalanced

The luck of the jet-stream to save this shot. I was trying to do a "balanced" shot...but his one was way too uninteresting without that "off"-balance jet-stream
beautiful ...

Nothing like a bit of serendipity. A nice contrast of subjects.

But in a funny sort of way it is balanced - the jet stream follows the longer branch very nicely . I really like it.

Its amazing how that trail totally changes the image. It grabs the attention to make the branches peripheral, a means of framing.

Lovely pov and colours.

@yrhenwr exactly! and without the trail, the image was just a big blop of blue....so my question for you...do the branch and trail constitute visual balance?

this really made me smile

@granagringa You do ask hard questions Madeline! I think you are on the right lines if you are looking at the relation between branches and trail here. They complement each other but that's not necessarily balance, is it? Don't look for theory... be practical. For example, you might try to photograph a particular scene in different ways... keep the same main subject but change the angle, the number of other elements, etc, looking carefully at relationships between them. You could do this as a table-top exercise too. When you view the images together does one stand out above the rest? If so could it be to do with a sense of balance? Oh dear, I feel I'm not being much help to you... I could never teach composition if only because I don't believe there are any rational rules!

@yrhenwr Belated thanks for your answer....I like your idea of working the subject to get the relative weights and table top exercise is my bailiwick...and being practical! Thank you, David, really!
