Best viewed large. Caution: Do not view if you have a weak stomach. A fish was injured by the egret in this shot. It is what he has to do to eat. It is nature.
The fish had a bit of help flying. After the Egret catches a fish, he lifts off and flys to dry ground to eat his meal, then he goes to get a drink to wash it down.
Thank you for viewing and your comments. Thanks to everyone for the view, comments and fav's on my other shots. I am overwhelmed with how nice everyone was to my Great Blue Heron shot and that it made the T20! It is the first time one of my shots has been on it.
@vaugdds Sometimes they spear them, as with this larger one. I have seen him catch smaller ones in his beak without spearing them. He can just open his mouth and catch the smaller ones.
@lindag Thanks! @maggiemae I helped him to catch it by throwing the bread on the water for the fish to nibble at! LOL! He knows me now and comes to meet me when I go to the pond. My husband says I have a pet Egret now.
Beautiful Linda! Great capture!! Instant FAV! Love the Action and the Feathers and the Color!! Great focus too! Nice friend to have at the park~ lol!! Congrats on your heron on top 20!! :)
@bkbinthecity Thank you! @ellimae Thank you for the comment and fav, Ellen! I was so surprised about the T20! @pawar_ramesh Thank you, Ramesh. I love birds.
Cracking shot you have done very well with the exsposure on the white Egret, I alway seem to have trouble with the white blowing out when taking shot of swans. Well Done
Magnificent capture Linda!! I can barely get a chickadee sitting on a feeder in focus and you continually grab these beautiful large birds in flight with pristine focus!! Very well done!! Fav!!
@tonygig Tony, thank you so much and thans for the fav! @pawar_ramesh Thank you very much for your kind words, it means a lot, Ramesh. @gphelps5 Thank you very much for your comment and the fav!
@esox Thank you! It has a lot to do with the time of day, where the sun is, etc. Luckily he caught some shadow on him and that helped a lot. The contrast and light/dark had to be tweaked just a tiny bit due to how very white he is. I stay away from over-processing a shot unless it is for an abstract or something. I like nature shots - natural.
@bmnorthernlight Thank you! It has a lot to do with the time of day and where the sun was. Late afternoon is when I prefer to take shots of these birds. One day I might try early morning and see how that works.
@edie@cindymc Thank you! @cimes1 Thank you for the comment and the fav! Carol, I help him to catch the fish! I throw pieces of bread into the water, he wades along watching for the fish to nibble the bread and when he starts leaning over with one eye towards the water, head parallel to the water, I focus in because he has spotted one. You have to be quick, get the focus and snap away. Sometimes he misses, but not always. He brings the fish within a couple of feet from me to eat it. He trusts me.
@grannysue
Linda, Flying fish is simply wonderful. Not sure what to say about yesterdays heron. So dramatic and well executed. The best heron shot I've seen, bar done. Congratulations!!
@rob257 Thank you so much! I appreciate it. I like the Great Blue Heron flying shot that I posted about 4 shots before this shot better than the one I posted yesterday because he looked so graceful in flight.
@pamfromcalgary Thank you!
