Turbulent

Jake ( @soren ) has been working with a home-made "big stopper" made from welding glass, so I thought I'd try my hand as well.

2 minute exposure, full daylight. Best viewed LARGE! :)

First thing, it isn't as easy as just stopping your camera down by shooting through dark glass; it's more of an art... and I've a lot of learning to do. All of my images tonight were far too dark, so I had to lighten this one up a lot, which really messed with the quality. Try, try again :)
Magic on all sides!

I'm looking at this on my phone and it looks beautiful. I will have to look at it tomorrow on a bigger screen to see what you are talking about (quality).

Still, this is a fine result for an experiment.

This is stunning Aaron.

Beautiful, Aaron. Damn, I miss those mountains! I'm new with the 10-stop ND filter and get a dark rim around the edges when I spin it down to the darker end -- do you know why this happens? (I took my UV filter off thinking this was impeding it, but that didn't really help).

To you the quality may be messed up, but it still comes in as a favorite image for me Aaron

If this is an example of quality you're not quite happy with, I can't wait to see photos that are more to your liking! This is amazing! :)

magical

I don't see any quality issues. This looks amazing. Shooting through welding glass ...great idea!

@yellowdog Thanks Kelly! I also have a variable ND filter, but if I turn it more than maybe half way (just a few stops) I start to get dark areas too; which is why I made the welding-glass filter. It still vignettes pretty badly on the corners during the very long exposures and when my lens is wide open. I'm not exactly sure why the variable ND was giving me so much trouble.

@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth! I first heard about it from Jake @soren , and actually he's the one who gave me the glass to make the filter with! :)

So stunning.....fav!

@grizzlysghost My husband has a welding helmet. He'd better hide it. I was looking to buy ND filters, but did not realize they cost $75 and up.

It looks a amazing to me
August 18th, 2013
@espyetta They sure can be expensive! Most of the shots I would use it for would be landscape, in which case I prefer to use my 16-35mm lens which takes 82mm filters; very expensive! The welding filter is just a drop in the bucket compared!
