This is the beautifully restored arcade I used to walk through on my way to the bus station on my way home from school., I am giving my age away here but in those days there used to be a sweet kiosk in the middle almost where those benches are. The only trouble was in those days you had to have coupons to buy sweets as they were still rationed from the days of the 2nd world war. Sweet coupons were the last ones to be discontinued & were used into the 1950's. Today this is a beautiful space containing a few classy shops. Quiet these days but I think it will come into it's own when development of that end of Preston starts including a John Lewis shop This is delayed due to the recession.
Well it has to be a Fav for me - we bought my engagement ring and wedding ring in Miller Arcade. I think the jeweller's has closed down now though. My friend Lois worked in John Menzies - nice to think there'll be a John Lewis there instead. Now I have to work out which school - I went to Lark Hill and didn't walk via there - Winckley Square? Even without the nostalgia this is a really cracking shot!!!!
@judithg I went to Winckley Sqaure !! Small world Judith I always thought there was a bit of rivalry between the two schools !! You in brown us in green !!
@happypat Thats the trouble Phil hardly any customers & a little bit to the north of the main shopping area & not that many shops, its not used to it's full potential at the moment.
@happypat Oh yes - the nuns always implied that we were cleverer and better behaved!!!! I was the last proper year through Lark Hill and spent my 6th Form at the Catholic College (what a dive in comparison!) and discovered that the Winckley Square girls were not in fact loose and daft after all!!!
@judithg Ah the Catholic College, so close but oh so far !! We weren't allowed to even look in that direction !! My sister went to Cardinal Newman 6th form College possibly around the same time as you Margaret Swinburne ? Would be amazing if you remembered her !!
I love these old arcades with the tiling and beautiful windows etc. There are a couple in Norwich I remember, so much more splendid than today's shopping Malls.
@happypat It doesn't ring a bell - I did sciences - we were on a different site to the arts lot - I'm better at faces than names though... I was there '81-'83. Can't believe my daughter is just finishing her Lower Sixth.....
