Garstang show

We have spent a lovely day at Garstang Agriculture Show & in spite of a quick shower just after this photo was taken it was a hot sunny day.

This is a photo of the Grand Parade with all the animals lining up for their rosettes. I was interested to see the white cow which has SOS Dairy written on her side.
This is with reference to the appalling price that dairy farmers are getting for a litre of milk ....sometimes less than a bottle of water.
We know personally we used to sell our milk for less than it cost to produce & farmers do this as long as they can because they love their jobs & way of life.
The trouble is that some farmers are on a special price for that supermarket as long as you adhere to various regulations ie it is a family farm or you use the feed they want you to, but others who aren't picked for this scheme just get the bog standard price which is not fair at all.

The demonstrations & picketing at the wholesalers does seem to be working & Asda & Morrisons have put the price up for the next few months.

Hopefully things will improve & we can stem the flow of dairy farmers leaving the industry.

Our two sons are both farming in New Zealand now & we were sad to see them go but don't blame them one bit!
Great shot and interesting story. Hope the picketing continues to have impact for the farmers

We are not farmers but used to love going to The Royal Show. A great day out. I do feel very sorry for the farmers.

Its dreadful, all the fault of the supermarkets who seem to dictate the price, i don't know how any farmers survive these days, lovely shot, really interesting BUT how did your photos do?!!

Beautiful picture, but so sad about he dairy farmers, although I also think this terrible summer wil effect all farmers..

Great atmosphere. Hoping for a fairer system for the dairy farmers. We still pay to have ours delivered!

@fannyb I got so carried away there on my soap box I forgot all about the photo competition, I got one first & two thirds & won the grand total of £5 !
I also entered another competition in the local newspaper & the final 10 picked by vote go through to the judges to pick a winner , voting for that ended yesterday so this Friday I should learn if I have got to the final ten! I have high hopes as some of the photos were awful & did not come out well in newsprint.

@fungirlslim You're right Jen some have had their cows inside for weeks eating the little winter feed they have actually managed to harvest.

@happypat Yes, the farmers near us have struggled to buy hay, and when they've found some it's so expensive ...

Its sad your boys have had to be so far away to make a living in farming. Lets hope things improve here. I love your picture btw.

@happypat Oh well done and good luck..

It's so sad so many of the "old" ways are being lost. Much the same is happening in South Africa.

Yes hopefully things will move soon. Love the horse and cart at the front of this. A typical country show scene. Oh and well done on the photo comp!!!

Very interesting ... great capture!

This is so funny- my Dad and my children were there!
August 4th, 2012
@flanners They should have had signs on saying Sarah's dad & Sarah's children on ...or even better just 365 on their backs !!!!
August 4th, 2012
@happypat Ha ha! They all came home with SOS Dairy stickers as well!
August 4th, 2012
Great shot! And you are so right about the price of milk issue! Hope the writing will wash off the white cow!
Glad we can have some choice in whose milk we buy up here!

All very interesting stories! We used to have millions of sheep in NZ and now we have millions of dairy cows! Love the Village Green!

Looks like a lovely day. Thanks for explaining the SOS Dairy. Congrats on your wins!!!

I would pay anything to be there. How much I love those shows. Great shot.

We have much the same thing happenning here. I'm terrified of the day when we will have to start importing milk because all our dairy farmers have been driven to the wall. On the other hand I really like this shot.

It's a fe wears since I've been there. I think the dairy farmers are treated terribly - as are banana farmers abroad. I buy my milk from Waitrose who at least pay a fair price I believe.

Very good capture. You can see the rain coming in the sky. Farming is tremendously misunderstood by a majority of the population. Though not a farmer myself, I was born and raised in a dairy farm area, and knew members of dairy farm families.
