Old haunts today. I have been in Preston mooching about & this is Winckley Street where lots of babies were born in Preston in the building on the right...Mount Street Hospital. Women could go & have their babies here privately tended by Sister Winfride who was a tarter, I know because I worked there for a year until I was old enough to go proper training at eighteen.
The old place is all boarded up now.
I tried a link here to my other album but hasn't worked so if you want see the front of the old hospital you will have to look on the other album.
At the bottom of this street is my old school so I used to walk up here sometimes on my way to Bruciannis for drink.
The Post Office has moved into this street too...I don't know how anyone finds it!!
I have made this photo quite dark as I wanted to show the chimneys off but it might be too dark now!!!!
Three good things:
1. Our clever granddaughter Alex in NZ has won a Dairy NZ Scholarship to pay for all her fees at Lincoln Uni where she has just started her second year.
2.Watching Jack playing the piano on You Tube. http://youtu.be/eNcmAsTrVK8
Self taught in the last couple of years & never had a lesson.......... I think it's bragging day today!!!
3. A friend for coffee.
@busylady Yes & we do have lots of streets just like that still & they were great communities not like some of the awful high rise flats they replaced them with.
@maggiemae Yes the piano is a beauty & he loved playing it. Looking at the picture I am pretty sure it is the one in the school chapel, you can see the pews. Thanks Maggiemae.
I like the darkness, it shows off the chimneys and the white roof eaves. And thank you for the link to Jack's performance - WOW is all I can say - what a clever boy! Beautifully done!!!
It's hillier than I remember- it sounds a bit Call the Midwife - my mum had my sister at Sharoe Green and me at home and it sounds like all the midwives were tartars in the sixties! Love your chimney stacks here and i like it high contrast. We will be playing Preston in the hockey finals - I'll cheer them on when they aren't playing us!
Cool. Looking forward to seeing more scenes of Preston. I remember this street. Also I think my mum's friend Margaret Whitaker went to winckley school. Don't suppose you know her??
@fueast Yes I do remember that name Alison, can't put a face to it yet but pretty sure she was in my year. Ask her if she remembers Pat Swinburne.
Bye golly that ages me ...your mums friend!!!!
It looks very built up an area. A bit on the grim side in b/w as if looking through a valley of dark buildings. Look at that long row of chimneys. I liked the small bit of info about the hospital. I'll bet you have some tales you could tell from those days, Pat.
Happy memories - I know Winckley Square etc. - well born and brought up in Preston but lived in Nottingham for almost 50 years. haven't been back to the area since my Dad died seven years ago. Thank you.
