Home again!! by happypat

Home again!!

Great excitement early this morning as Jack arrived home from Japan for Christmas!
Cathy & Garth went to pick him up from Manchester Airport around 6am.
Lydia made him a welcome home sign.

We popped round this afternoon, it’s eighteen months since he was home so was good to see him!

Three good things:
1. Christmas is family time & those near & far are always in our thoughts.
2. I found the pudding rice at last in Booths!
3. Collected the turkey, just need to look up how to cook it now! I e never cooked a turkey crown before, it looks rather small!! We are going to add a breast & leg of the spare one we got yesterday just in case!
日本語!
Imagine my surprise, opening my 365 feed, and seeing this sign! So, what was Jack doing in Japan, my homeland?

@jyokota Have they spelt it right Junko? Jack is on the JET programme. Not sure if you e heard of it. Your government recruits graduates from many countries universitaries, so many allowed from each country. They pay airfare, find them accommodation & place them in schools round Japan teaching English & different ways of life. Four hundred allowed at one time from the UK. It’s very hard to get chosen so we are very proud of Jack. He’s half way through his second year & has signed on for his third & probaly last year finishing in summer 2020. He’s enjoying it very much & loves the Japanese way of life & people. He’s based at a school in Takasaki.

@happypat and... if he is anything like our son John who started out the same way - he stayed on for another 18 years! Still there!

So good to nhave another one of the tribe home for Christmas - I am sure you were pleased to see Jack again after 18 months in Japan . Hope the turkey breasts will be good after all the breasts are all meat . I always buy a whole turkey because I like the red leg meat with the breast - I find it has more taste ! Have a wonderful Christmas with most of the family there around you !

@maggiemae Ha ha Maggie, you never know he might find a job he would enjoy in Japan but hasn’t yet decided on his forever career. I’m pretty sure he is looking on it as pretty temporary at the moment.

@beryl me too Beryl, I love the leg meat but as there are so many of us I think the crown will be easier to carve. Not used to cooking a crown but will research tomorrow! We will be fighting over that one leg! Ha ha! Thank you for your kind wishes!

That's such a lovely photo of them both. So nice he's home for Christmas too. 😊

@maggiemae He is learning Japanese Maggie but as he’s teaching older students the whole idea is to speak English whereas some of the JET teachers are with younger children so get to hear Japanese on a more regular basis,

We always do that too (buy extra). After reading about the program Jack is in, I know you are so proud of him. How wonderful to be immersed in the Japanese culture for years instead of just a semester at school.

@louannwarren Thanks Lou Ann, Japan is a fascinating aging place & I know Jack is loving his time there!

Enjoy your Christmas Pat! Hope to see you in Paihia next time you come to NZ...

@happypat -- I do know the JET programme. My daughter was to be in Fukushima -- but after 3/11/11, they would not place her in a school outside the evacuation zone so she ultimately opted out due to long-term health concern. Takasaki is where the train lines split so we have stopped at that station many times when changing from our sister school in Urasa to go to Nagano or Bessho or Ueda, etc. Home of Daruma! Have you been to Japan to visit him?

Awesome smiles! Hope the visit is fantastic.

@jyokota Oh yes that terrible time would definitely alter everyone’s plans. We haven’t visited Jack yet although his dad & mum went for two weeks in May & loved it! Hoping to visit perhaps next year on our way to NZ. Must try & go before Jacks time is up. He is loving your country & so glad he had chance to experience It all, he is very lucky!

@happypat -- I DO hope you make it to Japan. @vankrey and I have been toying with the idea of taking another group of adults. It's been a few years since Picture Japan, our only other adult trip, although we have taken 11 groups of high schoolers two weeks at a time.
