Under plastic… by happypat

Under plastic…

Three of us went for a walk with Connie on the usual route when she comes to our house…. The maize has been planted on our old fields under photo-degradable film. The film acts as a mini greenhouse & breaks down quickly by bugs & microorganisms, it’s similar to the degradable bags in supermarkets.
I was looking into the sunlight as I took this & the plastic was really shiny.

Three good things:
1. Cathy did our feet for us!
2. Kit -Kats out of the fridge!
3. I saw the first bluebells in the hedge.
Wow that's amazing. Gets it going a bit earlier I guess.. Hopefully you don't get a cold snap after it has decomposed..

@julzmaioro Well it lasts for ages & you can still see it under the plants when they are a couple of feet high Julz. All gone when harvest time comes.

Amazing how these large expanse of land covered in biodegradable plastic --I find it it often creates an illusion of water on the fields .( as it does here ! )

It must be a lot of work - bending - but the outcome would be worth it! A bit like they do with strawberries over here!

Interesting to hear the science of how it works. And Kit Kats from the fridge.....oh yum!

Beautiful capture and scene. These must be cloches. They keep bugs and insects away apart from doing the work of a greenhouse. They are common here for strawberry growing.

@sangwann The plastic just lies flat in the ground Dione & then the maize shoots push through. Works exactly like a cloche!

Such a different way to NZ growing. Our son will be interested to see this.

@dide Not everyone does it as it’s expensive but if you want to get it in early this is the way!
