Evening snack by haskar

Evening snack

I found this mantis just as it had caught a grasshopper. The grip was very strong, thet the victim had no chance. Before I could take my first shot, the grasshopper had already lost its head. The insect was devoured very quickly, and then mantis began cleaning its mouth.
super capture ~ Sadly, I saw a picture on facebook of a praying mantis eating a monarch butterfly. That's mother nature I guess.

@lynnz Yes we have seen this too, both monarch caterpillars and butterflies are prey, which makes me not a fan of the mantis!

I know they are are known by "praying" mantis- but my mind always thinks "preying" mantis- especially when I see images like this one. Excellent detail and image.

I read an article today that they are migrating, and we also already have them in the southern part of the country. However, there is no research yet on whether, as an invasive species, they will not be dangerous to local insect species.

@vaiguo I found this specimen near the Bug River, but I know they've been observed near Suwałki. In Lower Silesia, praying mantises have been observed for several years, and so far, no negative impact on the environment has been observed.
