I took this picture with the intention of showing the difference between the Hairy Woodpecker (front) and the Downy Woodpecker (rear) since I am pretty sure that is what they are. Only looking at it now, the size difference doesn't seem as obvious as it did with the naked eye... Bottom line - they look almost exactly the same but the Hairy is a lot bigger. They are not as common around here either so I am always a little thrown when I see them - always thinking a poor Downy has an overgrowth problem... It would have helped show the sizes if the boys had switched places for me but since I don't speak Woodpecker, I had to go with this. :-)
Since I didn't know the difference this picture is clearly showing me the difference. Not only the size of the birds but the beaks and head colorings are different too! Love how you were able to catch both of the together to show the difference! A big FAV....
