Your country needs you, lets strike up the band.

Lyrics from a 1980s UB40's song, image inspired by the official video:

Other pertinent lyrics from UB40 include:
"I'm a British subject not proud of it while I carry the burden of shame."

I saw this band at the Hammersmith Palais on several occasions in 1980s. Early 80s I was a student in London and carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.

Which is why the title "Dude, It’s, Like, Totally 80s. Duh." just doesn't work for me. I spent the 80's grappling with issues such as nuclear war, the purpose of humanity, and traumas of love. In this decade I also:

'celebrated' my 21 birthday
graduated from University College London
Started my first full-time job
Purchased my first property
Got married
worked through five grades within the banking sector to become a manager whilst knowing not the first thing about banking, and rather despising the institution
moved from London to the alarmingly provincial town of Bedford.

There is so much I could tell. Excuse the hat. I wore it to a 1980's fancy dress party when my youngest son was around 14. I thought I looked such a cool Dude in it, that I wore it out again the following week to a gathering in the local pub at which my son was present. We had a huge public row over it, since I was totally embarrassing him but refused to take it off. Thankfully, we can now both laugh at the occasion.

All this nonsense in aid of the 52 portraits of me challenge.

brilliant! awesome self portrait, helen. you guys are just plain kicking my butt with your interpretation of the prompts.

Your narrative on its own deserves a fav!

Fav!! I recognise quite a lot about the 80’s: (lost) loved, demonstrations against nuclear arms, studying and getting a degree as a cultural anthropologist, meeting the love of my life (banker, haha, of the good sort) and I loved to chill on UB40... Those were the days, my friend...
