Insulate to Incubate

Whilst there is a hive of activity up and down the river with cygnets, ducklings and goslings fighting it out for attention from adoring admirers on the bank, this cob is not yet half way through the incubation process. I am so glad she has her feathery down to snuggle into. I am passing whenever I can to keep an eye on things - the last lot of eggs were stolen, I am told, so I do hope all goes well with these. I never saw any more eggs in the nest since the five I reported on here http://365project.org/helenhall/365/2016-05-18
The detail on the feathers is outstanding Helen. She does look very tired though. Hope all goes well with the incubation and soon you have some cygnets to show us all. Fav.

Oh Helen, you have outdone yourself on this one. I love the feathery detail and buried beak amongst them. It looks like a painting. Absolutely love it. BIG FAV!

You were brave to get so close Helen! A lovely shot and an instant Fav

@rosiekind she is nesting so close to the riverbank and apparently oblivious of those coming right up close. If she showed any reaction at all, I would back off.

Fantastic detail. There is a swan at my local fishing lake still on the nest, in a similar pose. My attempt was no where near as good as yours. Lovely shot.

What a great close up. I hope her eggs aren't stolen this time.

Superb choice to make the feathers the 'star' of the photo and her head as a supporting element via DOF. Fav.

@flowerfairyann I think it could be a few weeks yet - but atleast the weather has turned a corner today. She will be very weak by the end of her sitting. Thank you for your comment and Fav Ann, which are both appreciated.

@daisyditch Thank you Daisy. How kind of you to be so enthusiastic!

@pasttheirprime Thank you for your kind comment. I think I was fortunate with the lighting conditions and being able to get quite close without disturbing her.

@kerosene thanks Caroline - I guess she will get very weak. I will continue to keep an eye out to see what happens.

@chipsngravy So glad you like the pose Alan. I gave the detail a little boost with HDR.

@gaylewood Thank you Gayle. Very kind.

@onewing Babs - I hope so too. Such a lot of effort has gone in to laying them and sitting. She is so vulnerable where she is.

@fotoblah - ah, I wish I had thought all of that before clicking. I would have felt more clever! But in retrospect, I agree, that is what makes the photo work well.

@ethelperry thank you Ethel. Much appreciated.

@marshwader Thank you Madeleine. Deciding where to crop makes so much difference to the result doesn't it?
