#safetypin selfie

On the day in which we commemorate the horrendous loss of life at the battle of the Somme I thought I would post this poem, from which we can draw much - 100 years on:

To Germany, by Charles Hamilton Sorley

You are blind like us. Your hurt no man designed,
And no man claimed the conquest of your land.
But gropers both through fields of thought confined
We stumble and we do not understand.
You only saw your future bigly planned,
And we, the tapering paths of our own mind,
And in each others dearest ways we stand,
And hiss and hate. And the blind fight the blind.

When it is peace, then we may view again
With new won eyes each other's truer form
And wonder. Grown more loving kind and warm
We'll grasp firm hands and laugh at the old pain,
When it is peace. But until peace, the storm,
The darkness and the thunder and the rain.

And still, the blind fight the blind:

My selfie, is a response to #safetypin
No, I don't think a safety pin is the answer to the problems unearthed by Brexit. But it could be the first step for individuals in taking personal responsibility to keep our home towns safe for everyone.
Nice macro and remembrance.

A brilliant macro; the reflection is great, & very poignant poem.
I would have preferred a complete safety pin though.

I have my safety pin. This is a wonderful tribute and I really like the idea of the pins. Lovely thoughtful shot. Big, big, fav!

@paulmann yes. me too. I'm afraid as I really was taking a selfie, I couldn't quite manage to get that shot satisfactorily (I couldn't see what I was doing). But I agree.

Dear Helen!
Your photo is great - very impressive!

The safety pin is open... May to close it...
The horrific events - what happened at the Somme hundred years ago... nameless fear... what words can take it...

Great shot...I love the reflection of the knit pattern on the metal. Moving poem; apropos for the times. Something in me wishes to fashion an entire dress made of safety pins.

@jerome Hi Jerome, thank you. The safety pin is closed and attached to my t shirt which is why you don't see the pin as closed. interesting observation though - it is so easy to interpret a photo differently when you haven't seen the context and we, as 'photographers' should be aware of that. And yes.....words are so often inadequate.
