Having found January difficult, I am in fear of February and so Im taking a look at the Black and White challenge and hope that I can learn something somewhere along the way.
Took to the streets with my ISO set unusually high and then got completely confused when it came to post processing and high key vs low key etc.
I'm a slow learner, but today, if nothing else, I have learned that it is valid to adjust the ISO. My policy had previously been only to adjust it when I had either too much or too little light to capture what I wanted.
This is St Paul's square, Bedford on market day.
1) Crank up the ISO before you shoot and make everything high-contrast in post-processing.
I found January really tough this time too. Too many dark nights and poor weather, I feel as if I have barely seen daylight. Nice street scene you've captured here. Makes me want to know what they're reading!
I really like this shot Helen. Especially the shadow play on the post from the open gate. Nice b&w. Suits the street photo perfectly. ISO is a nuisance for me. My camera does not handle high ISO well, and well, you know then if you want to get those high shutter speeds in low light what a pain it can be. I hate noise. Sometimes I can't get rid of all of it. Grrr. This is a Fav for me.
@wag864@kwind@shylaine3304@onewing@linjoyce you must all consider me perfectly rude for spending so little time on your projects. Hopefully this is a temporary blip whilst I am knee deep in other stuff but determined not to give up on the project. Thank you for the interest and the comments.
@suesouthwood that is my hope too. Im pretty sure now that high key has lots of light and an overexposed look, whereas lowkey has lots of dark and an underexposed feel. So low key and high contrast go together beautifully. Ill try to look in on your project and we can see how each other get on!
Fantastic street shot, Helen! I have such a difficult time with B&W images...this is a great one. I'm sure I'll learn a lot through viewing your B&W Challenge images and reading your narratives/comments. It's wonderful to be back in communication with you through our projects. :-)
Ah yes, best of luck with the flash of red dear Helen! That's actually very valuable to learn about it, good for you! I tend to adjust the ISO for the same reasons you used to, just to adjust to the light around me. I would have much to learn if I were to do the flash of red (I'm incapable of sticking to themes so I won't do it :))...
