When Mum was largely confined to the chair in the corner of her dining room, she had full view of the glass cabinet which held a strange mix of practical, precious and sentimental items. It got to the point that frequently, when one of us visited, she would urge us to take something from the cabinet as a gift. Us three siblings were never aware of what had gone to each other's homes, as the cabinet always seemed still full at each visit. We don't often visit each other's homes, but when we do, there is always something we spot thinking - how did that come to be here!
And that is how, some 20 years ago, I came to inherit this coffee set, which I had never seen in use at my parent's home. There is nothing in my house deemed too precious to use, and so along the way, I seem to have lost three of the cups (maybe I never had all six?) which rather saddens me. The glaze is badly cracked and shows some staining - I'm not sure how I can have cared for them so badly, or whether I inherited them like that.
This is the small coffee cup I had in mind to photograph for the challenge, before I got carried away with the orange background - against which this most definitely fails to shine.
The stains and cracks make it all the more interesting. Somehow the three survived all that was thrown at them and still manage to shine through the cracks and stains. A beautiful story.
