Walking back from Sports Day at Will's school, I noticed Mummy house martin on the telegraph wire, encouraging her two fledgling offspring to try to fly; the two youngsters had a slightly scruffy adolescent look and seemed reluctant to leave her side. Then the big guy on the right turned up. At first I thought this was Dad, swooping in with some useful advice like, "Stop mollycoddling them, they've got to learn to be independent some time!" - but then I noticed from his tail that he's a swallow not a house martin, so maybe he just stopped by to watch. I think he was putting the little ones off because they refused to move.
I think the little house martins are saying ' what, fly, off here!? are you mad? and what's going on with his tail then? Do we have to learn to fly?Why do we mum? muuuuuum, why? Hope they made it!
If only we could know what animals are thinking..just for one day, wouldn't that be fun? This is such a good capture as it does make us want to know what these birds were doing...or thinking...(do birds think?)
I love this picture AND your story that goes with it.
But no wonder the little ones don't want to let go of that thin wire -- there is NO net under them !!!!! LOL
Brilliant pic, and yes, the story is great too! Love birds, recently started feeding them in the garden, and its been fab to see the new visitors when they've figured out there is goodies available.
