Lavender Fairy Cakes by helenmoss

Lavender Fairy Cakes

Okay, so, it's much more fashionable to call them cupcakes these days, and the term fairy cakes is sinking into obscurity, along with eiderdown and wireless, but these were definitely cakes fit for a fairy princess! It was my turn to volunteer to help with cookery club at school. This term we are cooking recipes using locally grown herbs, and I thought it would be fun to make these. It was!
It's almost 10.30 at night and it is 26 degrees outside. We've been sitting outside at the village pub and not even needed our cardies. What's going on?
oops. sorry, I just reloaded this and lost a couple of comments from the original.

Glad I'm not the only one who calls them Fairy Cakes and their cousins "Butterfly Cakes". I also refuse, absolutely refuse, to pay £1 to £1.50 for ONE fairy cake! They are only sponge with icing or cream.... where does the pricing come from? Like your wee bun (aka Fairy Cake) and love crunching into those silver balls!

so pretty, the lavender blossoms are really set off by the whire icing. I've never used lavender for cooking.

Aren't they wonderful! Keep using the name so it doesn't fall into obscurity...it makes them seem all the sweeter for calling them that!

Great shot and they look delicious! Do not complain about the weather, -4oC here this morning, car frozen solid and washing in the laundry waiting to be hung out was also frozen.

What is cardies?

This fairy cake is very pretty,I've only made tea with lavender, don't they have a bit of a soap flavour?Guess the icing helps make it sweeter?

Cardies and Fairy Cakes... I'd join a movement to keep older colloquial terms in use alongside the changing language. We have such a rich heritage of interesting words - and Ireland has even more! Love to keep alive words that our parents used but you seldom hear now. I too love Alan Bennett's work!

I saw you asked ... I found Louise's recipe here ... http://365daysintheyear.shutterfly.com/1161
Go to the next picture for the icing.

It looks lovely. I vote for keeping fairy cake. It has a much more whimsical sound than cup cake.

LOL...I see Eleanor just beat me to it... I was going to say that you're obviously an adept cook, so this one "will be a piece of cake", so to speak! Enjoy! The left overs stay moist for days (if it lasts that long!)

Ahh so pretty, how did you get the icing so perfect, whenever I make these there always seems to be icing pouring over the edges and sticking them onto the plate!!
