I've always loved the icthyosaur weather vane that graces the beautiful copper cupola on the roof of the Sedgewick Museum of Earth Sciences in Cambridge. So when I was calling into my old place of work in a nearby building to visit friends for a lovely lunch and a catch-up, I couldn't resist taking a picture. It was only later that I noticed that he's recently taken to sporting a Santa hat on his tail!
The fire-escape on the left is attached to the outside of a building in the foreground, but from this angle it looks like a stairway to heaven. Or at least to a closer view of the icthyosaur. The imposing Victorian buildings on this site house all manner of Science departments - I'll have to go back and take more pictures because they are full of architectural wonders!
And I did enjoy the chance to pair the words copper and copula in a single sentence. I considered throwing verdigris in too, but thought it might be over-doing things, but there, I've done it now...
Great picture and goodness knows how that hat got there.
I know that copper is meant to have the verdigris (thanks for the spelling there ) on it, but I just feel the need to clean it and make it shine! There is an awesome statue of Queen Victoria in Brisbane and every time I saw it my fingers just itched.
Managing to get "icthysosaur", "verdigris" and "copper cupola" in one sentence is quite an achievement - there can't be many places in the world where that is possible. Fantastic photograph.
