When I was a kid all of this area was occupied by a ship yard. They built large ships there from welding the steel to make the hull to fitting the electronics and interiors.
in the middle of the photo, on the right you can just see the top of a red building - that is my old school. I played in the marching band there and every time there was a launching ceremony and baptizing of a ship the school band played there.
