Life Lessons!

Football is winning and losing. Today, we won 6-0, but it was a short lived victory. My husband starts out the huddle after the game with a speech on how to properly handle bad officiating. #1 players should never argue with a referee. Then, he addressed fighting with other players. On the final play of the game, which cinched our win, one of the opposing team's players threw a punch at one of our players. Another of our players pushed him away and our players started to leave the field. Not sure what happened. Other kids got involved. The kid who tried to break it up originally, went running back out on the field, but got stopped by one of our coaches. The referee saw it and banned the kid from the tournament. He is one of our best players. Meanwhile, the head coach and another coach almost got into a fist fight over substituting players and some parents got involved. Later we learned that the boy who was ejected had an unfortunate family event Friday night at the hotel. His dad was in the local jail for domestic violence. Thankfully, the team president showed the tournament president a video proving he wasn't involved and he was allowed to play in today's game.

That game was another life lesson, a very hard life lesson. The Panthers came out fighting, dominating the game until halftime. We were leading 6-0. After halftime, the other team scored and the coaches starting fighting again. It got way out of hand, literally almost ended up in a fist fight. Basically, our team president didn't have faith in our boys and asked another local team to "beef" us up. We though we were getting a few boys to give us more depth. They thought they were part of an all-star team, equals. Very hard to merge two teams this late in the season. The boys all got along great, but the coaches did not because of differing coaching styles. As the coaches were screaming at each other on the sidelines, the boys became more and more distracted. We lost the game 6-21, their first loss of the season. Not the way we wanted to end a fabulous season. Very sad for the boys as they played their hardest and didn't deserve half of the life lessons they got this weekend.
that is quite the tale. school sports definitely covers the bases of adolescent life

@francoise This isn't even a school sport. Well, the local school does have football and many of these boys play on their team as well. But, this is just a community "club." But, they spend a lot of time trying to mentor many of the boys who don't have fathers on the scene.
