Tobacco is a major cash crop in the South. There are tobacco fields down the street from my house. They even had this display at the local county fair, although it's still a little early for harvesting and drying tobacco leaves. As a non-smoker I can't really understand the obsession with this plant, but I recognize that it

@sarasdadandmom I was surprised by the strong smell of it. It actually didn't smell bad while drying, but we didn't stay near it long. My husband is allergic to tobacco.
@joansmor I could live without it, too. It's quite popular here, still. I guess if your grow it, you use it. YUCK!
