Blowing Rock park is a very small park on the top of a mountain along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock, NC. The whole park is 1200 feet long, yes feet. The highlight is this rock, which the town is named for. Ripley's Believe It or Not says that the snow actually falls up instead of down here. Indian lore says a Chickasaw chieftan his his daughter under this rock to protect her from the white people. She saw a Cherokee brave in the valley and shot an arrow at him. When he came to find her, they became sweethearts. Torn between returning to his people and his love, he jumped off Blowing Rock. She sat on the rock and prayed to the spirits to return him to her. As she prayed a strong wind blew up from the valley and returned him to her arms. Now people risk death to dangle their feet out over the rock for a photo. It's even a popular spot for wedding photos (with the bride standing on the rock looking out over the valley).
@ingrid01 I could probably stand on the rock about halfway up, which is where they typically take the bridal photos, but if she'd have slipped, that railing below would have caused great injury.
@henrir Oh, no, this isn't me! LOL! Heights don't bother me, but no way am I coordinated enough to climb up there and sit down. I have no idea who this lady was.
