Why I Love Photography

Although I didn’t take this photo, I wanted to share it as without it I would have no idea what my great-grandmother looked like. I found this in this past week on Ancestry.com thanks to distant family members contributions.

Blanche Stroh (Miller) pictured here was born in 1916 and died in 1947 at the age of 30 just hours after giving birth, from an arterial bleed that was neglected by her physicians. What a tragic way to go, especially when there was a procedure in place even then that could have saved her. Her husband, left with four small children, sued the hospital for malpractice and won 3 years later.

My grandma, Blanche’s daughter, was only 10 when she lost her mom and did not stay close to her siblings (I’ve never met them) as she got older, so I never knew much about my great-grandmother or what she looked like. But someone cared enough to take this photo and save it. It means the world to me to have this photo now. What a beautiful, sweet girl.

When I take photos of friends and their babies or loved ones, I really try to capture “those moments” between them - a look, a shy smile, the baby’s head in the dad’s hands, and such moments that will mean something to them and eventually hopefully the next generation, or even two generations later as this photo of Blanche did for me.

oh what a tragedy, she looks like someone you would love to meet doesn't she

How wonderful for you! In a way she looks very modern - not constrained like many photos from that era. :)
