Martha, died 1st Century; sister of Mary and Lazarus; friend of our Lord; model of hospitality and faithful disciple; confessed her faith in Jesus as the Son of God; in the Gospel of Luke 10, 38-42, Jesus visits the home of two sisters named Martha and Mary, the two contrasted: Martha was "cumbered about many things" while Jesus was their guest, while Mary had chosed "the better part"; patroness of housewives, waiters and waitresses; often represented with basket of fruits and keys.
