Oh Dear - Our Bridge is Too Short! by if1

Oh Dear - Our Bridge is Too Short!

268 - One of the major Millennium projects in York was a new cycle / foot bridge over the River Ouse south of the city centre, linking South Bank and Rowntree Park with Fulford and the University, and forming part of an orbital cycle route around the city.

Sadly, the floods have shown it to be a little short, with flood water on the west bank covering the cycle track to the bridge. The right hand shot shows one of York's more intrepid cyclists making his way through the flood water from the bridge to South Bank.

The good news is that the flood water has now passed it's peak of 4.56 metres and has fallen slightly.

If you want to look at this bridge in normal water conditions, see http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-03-28
Ahhhhh...... a problem!

Uh oh!! Cool collage!

Jen
oh wow, flooding. its raining a lot here and might flood.
November 28th, 2012
Well, I'll certainly stop complaining about all of our rain! It looks as if you guys have had it very bad. Nice photos of a nasty situation.
November 28th, 2012
Oh dear... that is a problem! Neat set of shots!!!
November 28th, 2012
Wrong design / plan ? Great collage to show the trouble you`ve with the water.
November 28th, 2012
Bob
Neat collage. The bridge has an interesting design above and below water.
November 28th, 2012
We are very well aware what floods can do, having gone through major floods in June 2011 which devastated Brisbane.
Great collage.
November 28th, 2012
Love the collage Ian, tells the whole sorry story of the flood.
November 28th, 2012
Nice shots
November 28th, 2012
yikes, that's a lot of water! cool bridge!
November 29th, 2012
Yikes - good combo of photos showing different angles on the flood!
November 29th, 2012
Fantastic collage but I am sorry to hear about the floods. Hope it will drain off very fast. You have had many floods this year, is that normal for your area?
November 29th, 2012
You are getting some great flood coverage shots. Glad the water is residing
November 29th, 2012
Great collage... You have had so much rain this year...
November 29th, 2012
Wow. What a contrast between this shot and the other one. Very nicely put together collage Ian.
November 29th, 2012
Yes, nicely put together. Floods are unfortunately part of York, and for 98% of the time this bridge is a tremendous asset to the city.
November 29th, 2012
Nice collage - sorry to hear about the new flooding but I'm glad it's going down now. Yikes.
November 29th, 2012
Nice collage!

@ruthmouch

Thank you Ruth - fortunately the floods are not long lived, and it will be a dry crossing again now.
November 29th, 2012
@clmiller

Thank you Caren - at least it is only a problem for a few days!
November 29th, 2012
@marshmallows

Thank you Jen - the flooding seems to be quite widespread in the UK at the moment.
November 29th, 2012
@gnilrets

Thank you Sterling - the water level has now dropped by about half a metre, so things are slowly on the mend!
November 29th, 2012
@monkeykid

Thank you Therese - the half metre drop in water level today means that it should now be possible to cross this bridge without getting wet.
November 29th, 2012
@pyrrhula

Thank you Pyrrhula - I'm not sure why it was designed like this, but I suspect that if the approach path had been made higher, more water would have been deflected towards neighbouring houses. The path is probably covered about 6-7 days a year, so not too inconvenient.
November 29th, 2012
@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob - it is an attractive modern bridge, and it's lit up at night too.
November 29th, 2012
@wilbo43

Thank you Bill - although the floods here in York look spectacular, those in Brisbane were far more destructive and deadly, and affected far more people.
November 29th, 2012
@tonydebont

Thank you Tony - good news is that it's now beginning to fall.
November 29th, 2012
@midumas

Thank you Michel, glad you like it.
November 29th, 2012
@comicbooklady

Thank you Carol - but at least the water is now going down.
November 29th, 2012
@kph129

Thank you Kristin, glad you like it.
November 29th, 2012
@tanja_1211

Thank you Tanja, the water level has dropped about half a metre now. It's not unusual for there to be floods in York - few winters pass without at least one flood - but what is unusual is the height of the floods this year. The September flood was the second highest flood ever recorded, and this one is quite high too. Because of the flood defences, only a small number of properties are affected, which is good news.
November 29th, 2012
@bkbinthecity

Thank you Brian - the flood level is now down by about half a metre.
November 29th, 2012
@roslynjoy

Thank you Roslyn - and yes, we've had quite a lot of rain, which is quite a contrast with the beginning of the year, when there seemed to be serious risk of a drought!
November 29th, 2012
@marieooi

Thank you Marie - I'm hoping there won't be too many more opportunities for flood shots this year!
November 29th, 2012
@collin

Thank you - it's only during floods that you realise how useful this bridge is. I was talking to a chap on his way to work while I was doing these shots. He walks to work and it normally takes him 10 mins - but when the water is this high it takes him an hour to walk the long way round.
November 29th, 2012
@ladyjane

Thank you Ladyjane - not quite as high as last time, but still a pain for unprotected riverside properties.
November 29th, 2012
@beba8162

Thank you Roberta - glad you like it.
November 29th, 2012
Great collage. The floods are causing lots of problems. Thanks for the updates on what is happening.
November 29th, 2012
wow. that is SO much water!! great shots and collage!!!
November 30th, 2012
@chris17

Thank you Christine - the river level is now more than 1.5 metres below its maximum earlier in the week, so with the current dry weather it shouldn't be long before river level is back to normal. Only another 3 metres to go!
November 30th, 2012
@kdimagery

Thank you Kd, glad you like this collage - although the water is quite extensive, most of it here is quite shallow (but rather dirty!)
November 30th, 2012
Love the title, sorry about the subject matter! You've done a great job of recording the difficulties in your part of the World!
December 3rd, 2012
@rhos

Thank you Ann - I think there will have been a huge sigh of relief now the river is back within it's banks.
December 3rd, 2012
Poor man :D Good story :))
December 3rd, 2012
@justinuole

Thank you Justina - at least it wasn't very deep for him, but I bet it was cold!
