268 - One of the major Millennium projects in York was a new cycle / foot bridge over the River Ouse south of the city centre, linking South Bank and Rowntree Park with Fulford and the University, and forming part of an orbital cycle route around the city.
Sadly, the floods have shown it to be a little short, with flood water on the west bank covering the cycle track to the bridge. The right hand shot shows one of York's more intrepid cyclists making his way through the flood water from the bridge to South Bank.
The good news is that the flood water has now passed it's peak of 4.56 metres and has fallen slightly.
Fantastic collage but I am sorry to hear about the floods. Hope it will drain off very fast. You have had many floods this year, is that normal for your area?
Thank you Pyrrhula - I'm not sure why it was designed like this, but I suspect that if the approach path had been made higher, more water would have been deflected towards neighbouring houses. The path is probably covered about 6-7 days a year, so not too inconvenient.
Thank you Bill - although the floods here in York look spectacular, those in Brisbane were far more destructive and deadly, and affected far more people.
Thank you Tanja, the water level has dropped about half a metre now. It's not unusual for there to be floods in York - few winters pass without at least one flood - but what is unusual is the height of the floods this year. The September flood was the second highest flood ever recorded, and this one is quite high too. Because of the flood defences, only a small number of properties are affected, which is good news.
Thank you Roslyn - and yes, we've had quite a lot of rain, which is quite a contrast with the beginning of the year, when there seemed to be serious risk of a drought!
Thank you - it's only during floods that you realise how useful this bridge is. I was talking to a chap on his way to work while I was doing these shots. He walks to work and it normally takes him 10 mins - but when the water is this high it takes him an hour to walk the long way round.
Thank you Christine - the river level is now more than 1.5 metres below its maximum earlier in the week, so with the current dry weather it shouldn't be long before river level is back to normal. Only another 3 metres to go!
Great collage.
Thank you Ruth - fortunately the floods are not long lived, and it will be a dry crossing again now.
Thank you Caren - at least it is only a problem for a few days!
Thank you Jen - the flooding seems to be quite widespread in the UK at the moment.
Thank you Sterling - the water level has now dropped by about half a metre, so things are slowly on the mend!
Thank you Therese - the half metre drop in water level today means that it should now be possible to cross this bridge without getting wet.

Thank you Bob - it is an attractive modern bridge, and it's lit up at night too.
Thank you Bill - although the floods here in York look spectacular, those in Brisbane were far more destructive and deadly, and affected far more people.
Thank you Tony - good news is that it's now beginning to fall.
Thank you Michel, glad you like it.
Thank you Carol - but at least the water is now going down.
Thank you Kristin, glad you like it.

Thank you Brian - the flood level is now down by about half a metre.

Thank you Marie - I'm hoping there won't be too many more opportunities for flood shots this year!

Thank you Ladyjane - not quite as high as last time, but still a pain for unprotected riverside properties.
Thank you Roberta - glad you like it.

Thank you Kd, glad you like this collage - although the water is quite extensive, most of it here is quite shallow (but rather dirty!)
Thank you Ann - I think there will have been a huge sigh of relief now the river is back within it's banks.
Thank you Justina - at least it wasn't very deep for him, but I bet it was cold!
