Tower on St Helen's Church, York by if1

Tower on St Helen's Church, York

304 - It's amazing how often you can walk past some places without really noticing them properly. This small tower was something I hadn't really noticed until today's sun highlighted it and drew it to my attention.

It sits at the top of St Helen's Church, which is essentially medieval in construction, although it was rebuilt in the 1550s and again in 1857-8, and modified at various other times. The tower itself dates from 1814.

The sun shows off the colour of the stone really well. I was going to venture out myself today but its been a bit grim here!

Excellent lighting and detail on that stonework. Well seen. I agree with Katharine that part of the joy of this project is seeing things that one might otherwise pass by.

@andrewrome365

Thank you David - although shaped like a lantern tower, it isn't described as such, so I suspect it's just Victorian decorative.
