National Cycle Network Marker Post by if1

National Cycle Network Marker Post

324 - One of the more impressive lottery funded projects has been the creation of a National Cycle Network, largely along bridleways, disused railways and quiet country lanes.

York finds itself on one of the eastern branches of the Trans-Pennine Trail, and has a number of routes linking it to surrounding areas. This marker post is on Route 65 which runs north from York and crosses the western end of the North York Moors on it's way to Middlesbrough.

This marker is one of a thousand scattered around the network and makes an attractive guidepost.
I have seen many of these on my foot-travels - this is a nice representation of them. I had not previously studied the design before, and I wonder if they are all the same or if they depict characteristics of the locality.

You've put me on the spot there - but I'm fairly sure we have similar ones in Ramsgate, painted black!

Very posh markers. When I worked I used to walk to work on a National cycle route. They' are great even for non cyclists

Your collage shows this off nicely. I like the idea of markers on the trails. We have similar markers on some trails, but not a national standard for them.

Thank you all for your kind comments and the support that they provide. I'm very grateful for each one.

I believe the shafts are to a common design, although some are painted in a range of vivid colours, or subdued like this one.

This is part of the Sustrans project.

There are a variety of other artistic features along the cycle tracks - a scale model of the solar system covering a distance of about 9 miles, features on street lights connected with light, electricity and magnetism and a host of other things. I hope to feature more of them as my project continues.
