Railway Locomotive Weather Vane by if1

Railway Locomotive Weather Vane

362 - High above what were once the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway is this weather vane, which was part of the construction of the offices in 1906.

The original locomotive outline was of a local passenger tank engine, a rather lowly status engine for such an important building. It was replaced by the current outline in 1922 after the bearings on the original vane failed.

I have an earlier shot of this weather vane taken around three years ago, when the whole thing leaned at a rather precarious angle following severe winds. It was taken down, repaired, re-gilded and returned to its place here.

The former offices have featured before in my project ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-08-23) and are now converted to the Cedar Grand Court Hotel, the first 5* hotel in York.
This is beautiful and so nice that it has been restored.
Love the light and sky in the photo too!

Nice shot. I really like the colors, the gold and the blue. I notice the E label on the gold ball is under the W on the direction vane. So, is the locomotive arrow pointing S or N?

Great capture of a very intricate weather-vane, as always you background narrative makes this quite significant.

Thank you all for your kind and generous comments, and particularly to Nicole and Frank for the favs.

Bob asked about the E on the globe below the W direction pointer. I hadn't noticed this before, but a look at some of my other shots of this revealed what was happening here. First of all, the direction pointers are pointing in the correct directions, and the locomotive is pointing north. The E on the globe isn't a direction, but is the middle letter of NER (North Eastern Railway, the original owners of the building) and those letters are spread around the globe
