Desert Locusts by ingrid01

Desert Locusts

In Africa these desert locusts are a pest because they are eating the crops. I can totally understand that as we have seen swarms in Oman too. Luckily the government here has money enough to try to control it. Normally they live a solitary live and are sand color, but when they live in big groups/swarms they turn bright yellow... great for the rainbow challenge...
We call them grasshoppers. Great timing on this photo!

@louannwarren - as I know you are always keen on learning something new... - from the internet: Locusts and grasshoppers are the same in appearance, but locusts can exist in two different behavioural states (solitary and gregarious), whereas most grasshoppers do not. When the population density is low, locusts behave as individuals, much like grasshoppers.

These were part of a big group and they were all doing the same thing, so I had plenty of time... ;)
