Banana Blossom by ingrid01

Banana Blossom

Not entirely sure if this counts as 30 days wild, but posting with that tag anyway.
We have a banana tree and the bananas are growing nicely. However, the last rows of banana blossoms are dropping off. Then I saw the banana blossom for sale in the vegetable section of the supermarket. So today I looked up how to cook it and went outside to cut it off (that is the 30 days wild part). It is a lot of work and although the recipe told me to treat it with lemon and salt in order to get rid of the bitter taste, it was still fairly bitter. I can see that it could be a good substitute in the vegetarian / vegan kitchen, but probably won't cook it again.
Well done for trying . Makes and interesting shot and culinary experience.

Nice to see the process, I’ve already eaten it but didn’t know how they prepare it !

Well, compliments for taking the effort ! I remember spotting packages of chicken feet in the supermarket when we were living in Brunei and wondered who would eat that and how to prepare it, I asked my amah and she said it was a popular dish in the Philippines and they put it on the bbq to make it crispy...great for calcium, I suppose ....

@wakelys @onewing @bkbinthecity Thank you for commenting. Interesting it was! But although there was a little left over, this morning it had disappeared from the fridge. My son (17) takes often a midnight snack and apparently it was good enough :)

@cocobella And did you like it?

nice pic, ingrid. in the philippines, it is normally stewed in vinegar to remove the pasty and bitter taste. else, it is included in mixed vegetable stews, one with soury flavour, and the other with peanut butter sauce. a long time ago, my grand-aunts used to dry the banana blossoms then used them in pork hock stewed in vinegar and soy sauce. myself, i just buy the canned banana heart, easier to deal with. 🤣 no messy fingers for days!
