Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib Mosque, Seeb by ingrid01

Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib Mosque, Seeb

This is another small and obviously older mosque in Seeb. We saw it and then I had to turn around for a picture.

I take the pictures with my big camera, but also a quick shot with my iPhone for the coordinates as Lightroom has an awesome map feature. So all my mosques are pinned on the map.

To my surprise this mosque has a long name.
Although some mosques do not have a name, or at least not in English, I noticed that there are at least 4 kinds of names:
1) named after a location: i.e. Seeb mosque
2) named after the iman: Mosque Iman Nur Al-Din
3) named after an important figure in the Islam: this one
4) named after the person/family responsible for building the mosque: Zawawi Mosque/Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

When trying to find information about a mosque I noticed that when a mosque is named after an important figure in the Islam, there are more mosques in Oman and worldwide with the same name.

Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib was paternal uncle and Sahabi (companion) of Muhammad, just three years older than his nephew. A wealthy merchant, during the early years of Islam he protected Muhammad while he was in Mecca, but only became a convert after the Battle of Badr

Love the combination with the local shops

Again all of the detail is above the roof. Interesting to see the old tyres in front of the shop.

Nice shot. I feel like many of the mosques are similar to this - quite small and integrated with shops and community. I like it, even though I also like the more elaborate designs

Is that an unusual sight to have shopts attached to the back of a mosque? I have never seen this before. Fascinating juxtaposition

Interesting those stores by the mosque. are they own by the mosque or are the private stores?

this looks like the mosque near my first apartment in muscat. you can bet i'm up early and in bed late for the prayers. one could get used to it though that sometimes if they're a minute late i'd open the window and look out to see if anything was happening, then the muezzin's voice would suddenly explode in my face. i quite missed it when the office moved me to hatat house.
