Saw these amazing clouds just as the sun was setting this evening. Wasn't sure what I was looking at but after checking with on Google, discovered that they are called nacreous clouds. Apparently they're quite a rare sight in the UK and are often a sign of stormy weather to come.
I've never seen anything like it before so was delighted to have witnessed something so unusual.
Wouldn't mind seeing the Northern lights next...definitely on the wish list.
How lucky you were to see it. I was busy reading and noticed the change in light around me - I did look out and see some nice clouds and colours around but nothing like this. I've seen so many photos of these clouds this evening on the internet that I wish now I'd gone outdoors and properly appreciated the sky as I probably would have seen them too! I've never seen nacreous clouds before, though I've often admired them in my weather books!
@roachling the photo doesn't really do them justice, the colours were incredible and the shape of the clouds quite unlike anything I've ever seen. Luckily, I just happened to be looking out of the window when I saw what looked like a rainbow in one of the clouds, then a few minutes later as the sky darkened the clouds were really colourful. I'm glad I know what they are now, at least I've learnt something new today!
