The Cavern Club was celebrating its 60th birthday today, it opened in 1957 as a jazz club but it wasn't long before rock 'n' roll took over.
The Beatles played here 292 times in the early 1960s, they were virtually unknown when they started. As their reputation grew so did the number of fans who wanted to see them and by their last gig in 1963 they'd outgrown the tiny cellar club.
I took this as ITV were broadcasting live for the local evening news. The club was closed while they were filming so there were only a couple of cameramen in front of the stage. This is Louis Berry, tipped to be Liverpool's next big thing.
I've seen many photos of bands on stage here, particularly The Beatles, so thought I'd process this in b&w.
@onewing you might be interested in this, my lovely husband was interviewed about the anniversary for bbc world news last week, they played some interesting footage from back in the day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0--xWSYLu-c
@inthecloud5 Thanks so much for the link. So interesting. Because I lived in Manchester as a teenager I didn't get to the Cavern as much as I would have liked. I did frequent the discos in Manchester though, my favourites were The Twisted Wheel and the Three Coins. (Jimmy Saville owned the Three Coins for a time, but maybe we shouldn't mention that). Rowntrees Spring Gardens and Rowntrees Sound were other discos I liked too. You have brought back lots of memories.
