Like the sheep, we were intrigued to see the Flannan Isles today when we were on a coastal walk, I'd not seen the islands before but had heard about a strange event that happened there over 100 years ago.
There's been a lighthouse on the islands sInce 1889, three lighthouse keepers were based there to light the lamp each night, warning passing ships that they were approaching the islands.
In late December 1900, a relief worker was brought here by boat, his arrival had been delayed by several days because of bad weather. When he landed he was surprised that not one of the keepers was there to meet him, and there was no sign of any of his fellow workers in the lighthouse or in their accommodation. After a thorough search of the island, it became apparent that all the men had disappeared. The last log had been made on 10 days earlier.
What happened to them remains a mystery to this day.
