Feed the birds

Here's the set up for feeding the starlings and sparrows

top left - the 'feeder' is a rattan planter in the shape of a pair of hiking boots which my friend gave me a couple of years ago. While they were on the wall waiting to be filled with plants, a robin landed on them so I put some bird food in them instead.
From the kitchen with the 300mm lens I can get a close-up of the birds with the background foliage in the garden blurred.

top right - the top of the boots where the mealworms go.

bottom left - the mealworms arrive in plastic tubs, 6 tubs packed in a cardboard box with a label 'live biological material' on it. Kept in a cool place they can survive for weeks but I can't have them in the fridge so a dark corner of the shed is where they go. There's some kind of cereal in the tub to feed on, bran I think.

bottom right - when I'm ready the tub goes in the top of the boot, the lid is taken off and a few minutes later the birds appear, I have to be ready with the camera as they don't last long!

The adult birds are feeding the young now so they take as many mealworms as they can. Yesterday we had a couple of baby starlings here too, it's a great way to pass some time and it takes ages to delete all the 'nearly' shots!
Here's the set up for the starling photo @jyokota

Hope you can get to do it too :)

Haha. They survive longer in the fridge. Only a couple of baby Starlings ?
This morning before I went out, I estimated 50 plus.
This afternoon a conservative guess well in excess of 80 maybe lots more. Very very noisy.
Plus ALL the foods gone again.
Think they might get one more weeks food.
Then nothing for a couple of days, and they vanish.

Fascinating set up. I want to find a nest like feeder before I order the mealworms

@markp you must have them all in your garden! Only seen a few this year but that's fine, the worms last longer.

@inthecloud5 -- thanks for sharing your setup! So how long does the mealworm set of packages last? I like how you have a natural looking place in which to place the mealworms. I bought all commercial looking birdfeeers. I checked -- and it seems the birds have been there because the seeds have been cracked and eaten. I have to be more diligent to see them.
