Doorway through garden wall by ivan

Doorway through garden wall

Tina took this picture of a doorway through the very old garden wall at St Mary's, Bramber. The high wall originally probably enclosed a kitchen garden in earlier times, full of vegetables, to supply the residents of the big house.

There were even pineapple pits, like cloches or very low greenhouses, glass covered frames. These had their own boiler, heating them to keep away the frost in winter! The wealthy certainly knew how to provide for themselves when such fruit was a luxury!

I've used Adobe Raw and Nic software to edit the image a bit (with the author's approval!)

Saw specialist today. Good news is that I can have my op soon, end next week. Take care and thanks for your nice comments.

@sangwann Thank you very much, Dione. In fact this area is known as the Secret Garden. It was once part of the garden of St Mary's. At some time it must have been sold off. About 3/4 years ago the current owners re-purchased it and now it is accessible along a little pathway as part of the garden of the house. Thank you for writing.
