The Prince's Stone by jamibann

The Prince's Stone

You live and learn. Today's walk with the Ballater Walking Festival was a 20 km walk on the Balmoral Estate to see this stone. It was laid by Queen Victoria, and commemorates, wait for it, the place where The Prince Consort, Albert, slept the night, in a wooden hut, on the 5th October 1857! And it says so on the stone. It has to be said that he chose a lovely spot as it had a beautiful view over the Cairngorms. Ah, Victoria did love her Bertie!

Anyway, tomorrow is a free day for us and then we resume walking on Thursday with our highlight of the week which will be walking through the Lairig Ghru - a mountain pass between Aviemore and Braemar, 28km on foot, but 60 km by road.
Oh wow you are getting your exercise................and what a interesting story!

If I have to travel 20km I'd normally take the car but I do enjoy a good walk from time to time ;)

Balmoral! Ah what an iconic place and I remember this stone from the Judi Dench and Billy Connolly film "Mrs Brown." Super shot of your beloved :)

This is funny to me. Any reason why he slept in a hut in the middle of this area? couldn't seem to find the answer on Google.

This is really quite an adventure you two are taking - what beautiful scenery you're hiking though.

I like the background to this scene -- and remain impressed with the details of your walking tour.

Great photo and great to be able to enjoy a whole week of walking.
Enjoy your chill day before the Lairig Ghru. I haven't walked it but I remember collecting David and his Scout friends after they had done it.....a lot of years ago.

Great place to walk, plenty of history to discover. Here, some bushwalkers scoff at using two walking sticks, but since l started using two, especially on rough rocky ground its so much better

@casablanca Funnily enough, I don't remember it from the film! I must rewatch it. Today's post is of Mr Brown himself.

@happypat Yes. Should be 100km by Friday evening - if all goes well!

@randystreat Who knows Kathy! It also seems very strange that Victoria needed to commemorate the occasion!

@joannakate Have to say - I scoffed when first I was offered them, but I always have them with me now. Don't use them all the time, but for steep ascents/descents and slippy, boggy ground they are very, very useful.
