This lodge sits on the edge of Loch Muick, at the foot of Lochnagar, and is a well known beauty spot in the area. It was built in 1868 by Queen Victoria, and she called it her 'widow's house'. She used it to 'escape' from the world following the death of her husband Albert. It is now owned by HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Despite its Royal heritage, there is an bothy at the back of the lodge which can be used any time by hillwalkers and backpackers. Apparently when Royal parties are visiting the lodge, backpackers can still use the bothy, but are asked to be discreet.
You can walk right past the front of the house, or take either the low road or the high road on the opposite side of the loch. We chose the high road on Saturday, which gave us great views down.
What a hidden gem! Surrounded by all those trees, you would need a bit of security there I think! How strange it would be just to walk past there & the Queen having a BBQ. Cathy & co did that walk last year I think...I remember her telling us the same thing. No one in residence at Balmoral then though. Fave.
a lovely setting and thanks for the info.
