Happy birthday to your dad, hope you all have a really lovely day & no cooking for you! š itās a very beautiful little fir coneā¦..part of a tree so we love it!!
I hope you had a wonderful visit with your dad and best wishes to him on his 88th birthday! Love the little pine cone. It could double as a pineapple in a doll's house.
Our dads are almost exactly the same age - mine is 88 in December. There was yours having his rural upbringing and mine was in a mill town (Rochdale). Neither with many material goods (Iām assuming! mine definitely didnāt have) but with the love of good parents. They would both have been the first year for free grammar school education as well which was life changing for my dad.
@judithg You are right ... there were very little material goods in dad's upbringing, but I guess you don't miss what you don't have, and most kids around our fathers would have been in the same situation. I don't know how education worked in those days in Scotland (I must ask dad), but possibly different from England. I think he had a scholarship for Robert Gordon's. His parents certainly couldn't afford much, but both dad and his older sister went to secondary school in Aberdeen (taking the bus in and out every day) and both went on to University in Aberdeen. Dad's sister became a GP, but dad bunked out after a year at Uni (I can only imagine how that went down with his parents ...) and he ended up doing his National Service with the Royal Military Police and subsequently joined the NE Counties Constabulary as a police constable based in Nairn to start with.
@jamibann yes I wondered if it was different in Scotland. My dad had to leave grammar school at 16 due to finances but he had met a lot of friends from a wider range of backgrounds than he would have done otherwise and had a much better education than his parents so his expectations for himself were different. He did an apprenticeship in engineering and did very well - degrees not as commonplace then obviously. He was the bridge between my (clever) grandad working in the cotton mill from age 11 and me doing a PhD in Cambridge - we had the same potential but totally different opportunities. Iām sure your grandparents were proud in the end - your dad did some amazing things!
@judithg Yes, potential is one thing, opportunity quite another. And also yes, dad did make his parents proud ... very ... despite his bunk out of University!
