Once upon a time, I read that bulbs forced for indoor bloom don’t do well when planted outdoors after blooming. Forced blooming takes a lot out of a bulb, and the weakened bulb will likely never bloom again was my takeaway from the article. Years later, I read that many forced bulbs will carry on just fine once planted outside. I’d been missing out by not trying! I put a stop to that.
A year ago, I brought home from the grocery store a mossy pot of blooming grape hyacinth bulbs for use as a centerpiece on the kitchen table; and when the flowers faded weeks later, I popped the bulbs into the pond bed, hopeful. Ta-da! What joy they bring tucked tight against a pretty rock where I can easily spot them coming and going. I went to the pond again today to snip a few — this time for my tiniest glass bottle; and this sweet, simple, fragrant arrangement delights me beyond measure!
