Chicken of the Woods by janetb

Chicken of the Woods

When I saw bright orange and yellow on the ground up ahead on Old Oak Trail, I immediately thought of a fallen leaf displaying — a bit early — fall colors; but I soon discovered the vibrant orange and yellow belonged to a mushroom! Chicken of the Woods to be exact, which I now know to be edible and quite sought after. We discover something new each time we walk our newly cleared woodland trails — such joy!

I praise you, Lord, for Chicken of the Woods with its vibrant yellow and orange lighting up our woodland floor.
That is quite a strange name for a bit of fungus! It does seem that your woodland trail has many delights to discover. I wonder if you dared to eat it? A lovely display of the bright yellows and orange - it looks quite special.

@helenhall Thank you for commenting! You’re right, it is a strange name. We did not eat it, but I understand that it tastes like chicken and that’s how it got its name. We had another look at it today, and it is even bigger now than what the picture shows!
