Very pleased that I decided to keep the boys off school yesterday, we ended up with 6 inches of snow, and the roads they have to take to school are not gritted and the village becomes inaccessible very easily. They had a fantastic time sledging down the side of the valley with all of the other children in the village while most of the parents took advantage of the fact that the village pub always opens during the day time on snow days. Unfortunately we were too busy peeling and chopping to join in the fun.
Today was the Burns' Night event that Graham and I and another couple organised and cooked for. The event was a great way of reminding me why I love living here, with people aged between 11 and 83 joining in. I had several calls in the morning to tell me that there was a car wedged across the steep road down to the village hall and it was preventing any access. By the time we got there to set up tables, chairs etc for the night's events there was already a team of 6 or 8 people there digging the car out and clearing the track of snow. More people came along to help get the room right for the 'do'.
Numbers for the event fluctuated throughout the day as some people were not able to make it due to the snow, and some people who thought they would not be able to make it because of previous commitments decided not to venture out of the village so came along. We ended up with about 80 people which was perfect.
There was a piper and highland dancer, the haggis was duly addressed and people tucked into soup, haggis neeps (swede/turnip) and tatties (potatoes) which whisky sauce and followed by apple crumble and ice cream. The tables were cleared away and the ceilidh commenced. Much fun was had by all and we raised about £600 fpr village projects. My boys did me proud acting as barmen and waiters for the evening, and even indulging me by agreeing to wear white shirts and tartan bow ties for the event.
What a fabulous night it sounds like. I've had to decline a Burns Supper invitation tomorrow because Rebecca is away skiing and I am in charge of the boys. Grrrr!!
